To many outside of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, temple worship and sacred clothing may seem weird or mysterious, especially since members of the Church often seem hesitant to talk about them openly. One common misconception is the idea that Latter-day Saints wear “magic undergarments.” However, terms like this are not only inaccurate, but deeply disrespectful to faithful members of the Church.

In reality, Mormon garments and the temple ceremonies they’re connected to have deep spiritual meaning. They’re part of a long religious tradition of using symbolic clothing and sacred spaces to draw closer to God. Understanding these things in their proper spiritual context reveals a beautiful tapestry of belief, devotion, and covenant.

The Temple Garment: More Than Just Clothing

The temple garment, or garment of the holy priesthood, is a religious vestment worn by faithful adult Latter-day Saints who have made covenants with God in an LDS temple. Contrary to the myths and misunderstandings that surround it, the garment isn’t meant to be magic underwear. It is a simple, white, two-piece undergarment worn beneath everyday clothing. But for the wearer, it’s a constant, personal reminder of their commitment to follow Jesus Christ.

Much like religious clothing worn by other faiths—such as the Jewish prayer shawl, the Catholic priest’s cassock, or the saffron robes of Buddhist monks—the temple garment is a symbol of devotion. It represents an inward commitment to live a life of faith, purity, and service.

Russell M. Nelson, the president of the Church, taught that wearing the garment faithfully “represents a continuing commitment” to follow Jesus and live in accordance with sacred covenants. In this way, the garment represents part of what the Apostle Paul called the “whole armour of God” (Ephesians 6:11–18), offering spiritual protection and a tangible expression of belief.

Symbolism, Tradition, and the Mormon Sacred Garment

The idea of sacred religious clothing is not unique to Latter-day Saints. In the Bible, God provided “coats of skins” for Adam and Eve after the Fall. Mormons see this as a symbolic act that represented divine love and mercy even in their separation from Eden (Genesis 3:21). Later, the Lord commanded Moses to clothe temple priests in “holy garments” as part of their ordination (see Exodus 28). These garments were full of symbolism, set apart for spiritual purposes, and linked directly to temple worship and covenant-making.

The Mormon sacred garment continues this tradition. It is associated with the endowment—a sacred temple ceremony where participants are taught about God’s plan, the role of Jesus Christ, and the divine potential of each person. The garment is worn after participating in this ordinance and is meant to be worn throughout life, serving as a reminder of the covenants made in the temple.

It is not the fabric itself that offers any spiritual power. Elder David A. Bednar, an apostle in the Church, taught that it is “our honoring of sacred gospel covenants and ordinances, our obedience to the commandments, and, most importantly, the Savior’s redeeming grace and mercy” that provide strength, peace, and protection.

Respect and Reverence

Unfortunately, temple garments are sometimes ridiculed or sensationalized by those unfamiliar with their meaning. Terms like “magic underwear Mormon” or “magic underwear LDS” may seem humorous or harmless to some, but to Latter-day Saints, they trivialize something deeply sacred. Just as many people would be shocked and offended by a desecration of their country’s flag, Latter-day Saints ask for respect and sensitivity for their symbols of belief.

It’s also important to understand that Mormon garments are not meant for public display. They are deeply personal and spiritual, and this is why faithful members take care to treat them with reverent discretion. It isn’t about secrecy or shame, but out of respect for what’s sacred.

Why Temples Matter

Closely connected to the meaning of the temple garment is the purpose of temples themselves. Throughout history, temples have served as sacred spaces where God’s people could come closer to Him. The Bible describes the tabernacle of Moses, Solomon’s temple, and the temple in Jerusalem where Jesus taught.

Today, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints builds temples all over the world. These buildings are set apart from everyday life. Inside, Church members participate in sacred ceremonies (called ordinances) that connect them to God and to their families.

One of the most special blessings of the temple is the promise that families can be together forever after death. In an ordinance called a “sealing,” or temple marriage, a husband and wife can be united forever. This union is not just “’til death do us part,” but for eternity. This can extend to the couple’s children as well. This core belief about eternal families is one of the most cherished teachings in the Church.

Who Can Enter the Temple?

Temples are not open to the general public after they are dedicated. However, anyone can visit a temple before its dedication during a public open house. Even afterward, the grounds and visitor centers remain open, welcoming all who are curious or seeking peace.

To enter a dedicated temple, Latter-day Saints must hold a temple recommend. This means they have prepared spiritually, demonstrated faith in Jesus Christ, and live in accordance with the Church’s teachings. This requirement is not about exclusion. It’s about protecting the sanctity of what Mormons see as the most holy places on earth.

Promised Blessings

The blessings promised to those who worship in the temple and honor their covenants—including wearing the Mormon sacred garment—are personal and powerful. President Nelson promised that temple worship can bring “answers to prayers,” “increased faith,” and “power from God” to face the darkness of the world. He called the temple “the gateway to the greatest blessings God has in store for each of us.”

The temple is not just a building. The temple garment is not just clothing. Together, they represent a sacred journey of discipleship, obedience, and transformation. Through these symbols, Latter-day Saints draw closer to Jesus Christ and find strength to live according to His teachings.

From Misunderstanding to Meaning

The next time someone jokingly refers to “magic undergarments,” consider instead the depth of belief that temple garments represent. Like the sacred robes, shawls, and habits of other faiths, Latter-day Saint temple clothing is rooted in ancient tradition and spiritual symbolism. Temples and temple garments are not about secrecy or “Mormon magic underwear. They’re about sanctity. And for those who live their faith daily, they are reminders of the Savior, of promises made, and of the eternal nature of God’s love.
