The Heretic Movie, Explained
Introduction to the Heretic Movie
Heretic is a horror film produced by A24 films that tells the story of two sister missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who knock on the door of a psychopath, Mr. Reed (played by Hugh Grant). Reed proceeds to entrap the sister missionaries in a vicious game of cat-and-mouse that challenges their faith and forces them to “question everything.”
Critics rave that the Heretic movie LDS is a provocative thriller that “sticks with you long after the credits roll” and “will inspire lots of conversations about faith and religion.” However, its portrayal of Latter-day Saints has some crying foul, including the church itself. The church issued a statement saying,
“Like many Hollywood productions, this is a work of fiction and is not based on actual events… It portrays the graphically violent treatment of women, including people of faith, and those who provide volunteer service to their communities. Any narrative that promotes violence against women because of their faith or undermines the contributions of volunteers runs counter to the safety and wellbeing of our communities.”
